Abstract: This paper synthesizes the presentation given by the author at the workshop “Engineering Education”, in the workshop “Education and Inovation in Engineering”, organized by ABENGE – Brazilian Association of Engineering Education, at the Federal University of São Carlos – UFSCar, in June 2006. The point for discussion was the heterogeneity of higher education in Brazil, particularly in engineering education, with examples taken from the personal experience of the author in the broad institutional spectrum represented by the schools for which he has worked. The presentation is concluded with the suggestion of a broad project aimed at the development of a more adequate pedagogy and methodology for a large portion of the Brazilian higher education sector, in particular for Engineering Education.

Key words: engineering education, institutional heterogeneity, pedagogical heterogeneity, pedagogy, methodology
